Don't order the stroganoff! This place has always excelled at breakfast and bakery items, though I haven't had breakfast there since the new owners took over. But today I write about dinner... Got a gift certif from restaurant.com (great way to save $$!) and headed there at 8pm on a Fri night. Very quiet, only one other table of diners. Prompt and friendly service. I ordered the stroganoff ($15) and I have to absolutely recommend that you NOT do the same. Picture a store bought jar of dk brown gravy over a pile of limp egg noodles with some cubes of microwaved gamey beef and beef fat tossed in. Yuck! Ikept getting huge hunks of fat and gristle. I didn't complain or send it back but wanted to warn the world not to order this entree... My guest ordered the full rack of ribs ($19), which came as 2 halves from very different animals. The first half was meaty and tender, the second half a bit tough and less meaty. I'm not giving up on this restaurant completely but I think dinner for me is out unless I'm really deserate...

Been here quite a few times in the past 11 years. The bacon is THE BEST ever! Oh yeah............. their breakfast is amazing too!
(4)Mike K.
First time back since 1983, New owners, but still great food and service. Be a bit more help to those driving if there were a sign or two on 3rd street to help those find it who've never been there

We arrived at 1035 AM, seated 45 mins later, finally acknowledged for a glass of water another 20 mins later, still took food another 40 mins to get to table and it was wrong! As the waitress hollers a rush order back to the kitchen. The hostesses tells me - it hasn't been 15 mins since you've been seated- trying to get a glass of water- no it's been 20! I listened to a waitress tell someone she was off the clock and would try to return to help out of the goodness of her heart. I watched people being seated out of order, elderly standing for an hour. Egg Benedict- no flavor- biscuit dry. Just happy to be fed after arriving 1hr, 45 mins ago- food finally just arrives. Wish me luck on getting the bill! A year later- went back bc we were on that block. 2yr old sat no kids chair or menu. Charged $7 for mac n cheese that was literally Kraft. Out of half of menu items, they forgot half the order. Owner and waitresses eating at front table. Then went next dr and overheard business owner was complaining say the piles of cigarette butts on the street were from the trash staff next door- lol. Not to mention waitress had a HORRIBLE attitude.

I am a long time customer. They have the best bread and pastries in town. People come from all over washington to buy their bread. In fact, if don't get their early enough, they run out of bread by noon. If you really want fresh baked bread and pastries, this is the place to go.
(4)Bran S.
I come here with friends only for breakfast and the occasional take home bakery item(s). That's all you'll ever need. Where can you go to get a complimentary half peach and mini muffin before being served huge, delicious portions? Black Diamond, that's where. On a clear, warmer day, the outside patio has a gorgeous view of Mt. Rainier. It's a brilliant way to show visiting folks the beauty of this state.
(4)Rachel W.
I come here all the time. Once you start buying their bread & rolls, no others can compare... the pumpkin pie is good & the cheesecake is the best I've ever had. In the restaurant breakfast and lunch are the best but some dinner stuff is really good too. No trans fats either, the food is homemade.

This used to be a favorite in the old days, not any more. They are under new management, and they are terrible.... Aside from the long waits on a Saturday or Sunday morning, the management is extremely rude and aggressive. We had an outing a while back with a couple of small kids, who were being... well, small kids. The owner/manager came over and proceeded to yell at us (no joke, yell) that we needed to leave if we couldn't get them to quiet down (one was crying and was taken outside to calm down, wasn't apparently good enough). We won't be going back, EVER. It's a shame, used to be such a great place to go with the family.
(1)Genessa A.
When I was a kid this was better. It is over-rated. The customer service is horrible, they are pretty rude and impatient there. The bakery items are anything special. The lunch is ok. Not worth the drive.
(2)E S.
I love this restaurant! They have the best breakfast and the best bacon. I live 40 minutes from this place but it is worth the drive. In addition to great food they have a great view to enjoy.
(4)Cameron W.
Everything is good there. They have awsome breakfast, awsome lunch, awsome, dinner. There food is cost a lot but its worth it
(5)Brian R.
Biscuits and Gravy - Yum Cinnamon Rolls - Yum Yum Yum 1/2 a peach as appetizer, reminds us of our youth! Great place to come and get away from it all.
(5)Carlos E.
Strawberry cheese Danish was delicious. 16 oz Americano was lovely too. But this is what I expected. The high school aged barista was pleasant to chat with but didn't really try to offer the quickest service....and had lack luster responses for suggestions on what to try.
(3)Mike T.
Black Diamond Bakery has the most delicious breakfast south of Brown Bag Cafe. The portion sizes are more than generous. Beyond that they have the best apple pie! Yum!
(5)David E.
I know they are noted for their breakfeasts, which I have not had a chance to try, but, my wife and I went there for dinner and we were both very happy with that. There were many choices and the special was baby back ribs with an apple honey glaze. My wife ordered that and I had the halibut. We agreed that it was a good decision as both meals were excellent. Along with that the service was very good and not being known yet for dinner there was no wait at all.
(4)Shawn C.
Excellent place for breakfast! I have to have a piece of their Key Lime pie, or take one home, before I go. Service can sometimes be low, but that is usually because of the wait staff forgetting our order or just a request. Other than that, you should go for the food and stay for the pie!!!
(4)Brian C.
I envy all the people who live near Black Diamond! This place has an outstanding country style breakfast! If you can travel to Black Diamond pull over for this one!!!
(4)Bill N.
We had a great breakfast on a Friday morning 9. Not many people there and no locals. This place looks to be more of a tourist destination for people heading to the mountain or something. I had a ham scramble that was ample enough and had quality ingredients. They started us with a canned peach and a mini muffin which was kind of weird but OK. Didn't buy any bread but it looked good.
(4)Anngie T.
Everyone in the world needs to go there at least once just to eat the Eggs Benedict! The food is always fresh and home made and delicious! A definite must!
(5)Josh F.
Well geepers had apple frosted cinnamon buns here and they were okay, two of them were more than two people would want. and the coffee bar was awful, poor service and half full lattes. pretty lame. I pointed this out to the barista who then filled my cup with cold milk, I was like "WTF" but then just in true Seattle fashion drank it. The whole vibe of the place was pretty lame, might be good just for the huge picture window with a view of the mountain, but i for one won't be going back.
(1)Capt k.
How would you feel when you find out the pastrami and cheese sandwich come with three slice of turkey, two slices of cheese and huge dollop of mayo at 7500 ft?
(1)Sami S.
loove black diamond bakery!! i love ordering from the restaurant but thats a little bit pricey so we just get our food from the bakery :)
(5)Lisa F.
I grew up on crystal mountain bread and it is to die for. The restaurant is pretty good, a local favorite.
(5)Julian H.
Nice service, affordable food and a great view. Lots of charm to spare.
(3)Jen S.
Sorry to rain on everyone's parade....but.....my experience was definitely way sub-par. Granted it was the service we received that sucked and not necessarily the food itself - but don't come here for the coffee, that's for sure. We were driving by and I'd always heard great things about this place so we had to check it out. Walked in, it was pretty crowded in the restaurant so we thought we'd hit the espresso/bakery line that was short and you can take with you. Bought 2 appley whole wheat cinnamon rolls and then headed over to the espresso line for a relatively simple grande latte. Got my latte and took the lid off to stir, was at least an inch low. Ok, not impressive but whatever. Showed to my boyfriend, both kind of shrugged. He got his latte, same thing. Decided to ask for more milk and here's the funny part - not only got a funny look but also got cold milk! Not even steamed milk (it was a hot drink). Ok....fill up the less than full cup with cold milk? The barrista wasn't necessarily friendly to begin with, now this. Probably won't head back.

After having several friends ask me if I lived close to here, I ventured the 2.5 miles down the road to check it out yesterday for breakfast. I was slightly overwhelmed when I first walked in, at both the sheer size of this establishment and the selection of baked goods available from the bakery. It's easier to think of this as two businesses in one. To one side you have bakery cabinets full of fresh baked pastries, pies, breads, etc. and can order a variety of espresso drinks. To the other, is a wonderful sit down restaurant with a wall of windows. To be honest, I hesitated to write a review because I don't want to have any sort of wait, but this place is a real gem. There is a wall of windows dedicated to Mt. Rainier's view. The staff was attentive and warm, you get a half peach and mini muffin to hold you over until they bring out delicious mouth treats. I ordered the ham and cheese scramble (with hash brown potatoes IN IT), and opted for the homemade biscuit. Delish. The portion was large, and I had enough to take home for later. On the way out, I picked up a loaf of pumpkin bread (the best I've ever had). To clarify: You can pay for bakery items/coffee in the restaurant, but you can not pay for restaurant items in the bakery, so you will need to plan your take-home transaction or have two separate ones. My only thing that I would change is to have some offerings which were smaller-portioned and subsequently lower-priced. I can imagine that for a family it would be a bit pricey. I will definitely be returning. Most likely, I will try to plan this around days when the mountain is out. I will check in after I've had lunch or dinner to update the review. I would definitely rent this place for a party, bring a date, or have a quiet meal alone. It is one of those places well-suited for any of the above.
(4)Dave K.
Yummmmy! Sitting at a table looking up at Mt. Ranier, eating a terrific country breakfast to die for ( including the complimentary half-peach and blueberry muffin) then bringing home a loaf of bread, or Russian Tea cookies, or marionberry pie; oh, you can combine your bakery order bill with your dining bill. This restaurant is worth a little extra drive, don't miss it!
(4)Emily T.
This is a good place to see obnoxious post-church families and people who enjoy wearing cowboy hats. This is also a good place to get huuuuuge delicious cinnamon rolls that are probably 3 days' worth of calories. This is ALSO a good place to get the fattiest club sandwich you've ever experienced in your life. The obligatory meats, cheeses, and bacon, but then add mayonnaise... cream cheese... AND guacamole. Whoa... I think that might be illegal. When I'm visiting the fam in the southern 'burbs and I'm in a self-punishing "fat girl" mood, Black Diamond Bakery is the perfect place to round up the folks for breakfast and clog my arteries for the entire week. The portions and ingredients are outrageous, but you can't deny the deliciousness and cuteness of this old-fashioned (it's been doing business since 1902!) restaurant. Plus you can visit the ye olde railroad museum next door. Fun for the whole family.
(4)Ben V.
i just want to say, that i still dream about this place.... I used to live in seattle and would drive up to black diamond through auburn (i love driving along the river on that winding road.) Their food is awesome with a great view of rainier. The best, was to go for breakfast. Man i miss this place... :(
(5)Randy K.
Great breakfast, with enormous portions! Suggest you share your breakfast order. Magnificent view of Mt. Rainier!
(5)Colleen L.
We biked our way up hill to get the the Black Diamond Bakery and it was worth the effort. We did have a tough time deciding whether to go with breakfast or lunch but , either way, couldn't (and didn't) go wrong. The service is incredible...and included a ride to our car. Can't wait to go back.
(4)GE A.
Go here on a week day and there'll be plenty of room plus tables at the wonderfully large picture window. We first had a simple eggs and home fries. Meh, ok. A few days later, I came back with hubby and had the eggs beny which is a much better choice. Overall, yes, I'd definitely come back but will keep in mind the Saturday/Sunday hordes who descend on the place and feel the need to shout at each other across the tables. Really folks, those of us with the misfortune to sit next to your table do not want to hear about your latest foot fungus issues at the pedicurist. A little more discretion, please?
(4)ryan r.
Always a filling breakfast experience. Its a little out of the way but it worth the extra drive time. You are brought back in time to a place that moves a little slower and serves larger portions than your traditional breakfast place. Great service and lots to choose from. I highly recommend trying it some Sunday morning. Kid friendly too.
(4)Maria A.
9/2009: catching up on posting old reviews. The Eggs Benny are the best! The canadian bacon was thick and juicy, which was on top of a homemade biscuit, the hollandaise sauce was so good, o should have ordered extra! My son had the French toast (cinnamon bread). Everything is homemade goodness at this restaurant.
(4)Laura I.
First off, the super large window is fantastic and the breakfasts are yummy at good prices. However, I agree with the one reviewer who said you're sure to see a lot of "post-church families." That's the kind of feel it has on a Sunday morning and as long as you don't mind that, definitely head over here for some good old fashioned cooking. There's also a little bakery attached to the restaurant that sells the same really good bread that was used to make the toast for your breakfast. In the end, this is a great little restaurant with a happy mom-and-pop feel to it. Try heading here on a sunny clear day and you won't be disappointed.
(4)Johnny P.
Good service, good food, great selection. Nice view of Mt Rainier when it's nice out.
(4)A B.
not only are the breakfast an lunch HUGE portions the dinner is also going home with you in a doggie bag... i usually get the gobbler (turkey, cranberry sauce, and sprouts...yummm) or french dip for lunch and eggs benny for breakfast (hollandaise sauce is just creamy enough and not overly done). coffee i think has improved over the past couple of months. i read the reviews about the "cold milk serving barista" and was a bit wary when i tried the special "white choc. caramel mocha" was absolutly DELSIH! hey for about $3 for an 16oz. i would not complain. i think the other people that were complaining were coffee snobs..go to starbux.
(5)Jim H.
The bakery is and has been great for years . . . I too remembered it as a standing room only; little shop. Now they have expanded it to a full scale restaurant - breakfast and lunch only. The breakfast portions are too large --- that's so they can demand and charge a larger price tag. Just order an extra plate and share your one order with someone, there's plenty. Their ham being served is real ham - to die for. They also serve a small muffin with a canned peach halve before each meal per person . . . nice touch. On special occasions, it's hard to make reservations --- like on Easter Sunday or on Mothers' Day weekend. The other side of the restaurant/bakery is like a tourists' gift shop. It's a great area to lounge waiting for a table --- have a latte. It's really the only place in the area for a good sit-down breakfast --- except when the Black Diamond Fire Department host their annual pancake breakfast just up the street.

growing up in the black diamond area, i looked forward with anticipation and love to every visit to this little landmark. i'm an adult now, and although i no longer live in the area i have made it out here many more time. the same servers have been working hre since i was a child, they are sweet and motherly, always calling everyone 'sweetie' and 'darlin' and serving up huge portions of amazing food with a little love on the side. i usually get the eggs benny or whatever is on special- and i'm never disappointed. i think that my favorite thing about the bakery is that it's so far out of the way- it' nice to get out of seattle and spend time some place where time moves a little slower and people are alittle quicker with a smile. on clar days i love to eat slowly and relish the sunny little dining room, basking in the glory of mt.ranier and remember being a little girl in this place. when you come here, take your time. don't rush. stop by the neighboring book store whille you waiting for a table, enjoy the cleaner air... and don't forget to grab i loaf of house baked rye and a dozen russian tea cookies on your way out the door. i love this place- all the bruch memories of my childhood are alive and well in black diamond.
(5)Ang C.
While hearing so many wonderful things about this spot, when I and a friend wanted to order some ice cream and some cakes, NO ONE came to our service. There were people eating in the restaurant and the bakery was clearly open. Why no service? I felt extremely ignored. The bakery had a rustic charm and the dining area had a beautiful view of the mountain. The setting could not make up entirely for being ignored and unattended to.
(1)Claire B.
This place is fabulous. The staff is always friendly and nice even when they are super busy. It's worth the drive down to black diamond for sure! Home made breads, great smoked ham, and the hollandaise sauce is fresh and lovely! We love coming here for breakfast. After you order the serve you a small complimentary muffin and a slice of peach. The veiw on a clear day from their dining room gives you a great view of the mountain. Sometimes parking can be tough on weekends. But it's worth the wait. The bakery offers baked items to go as well. Donuts, cakes, breads, yummy!
(5)Jaymee M.
I have been here many times in the past, growing up in Maple Valley, It was staple. That being said, this was my 1st visit in over 8 years. I was a little scared after reading some of the recent reviews that I was not in for the treat that I used to be in for. I was expecting it to be packed as it always was, but it wasn't at all. We were seated right away and our waitress was super nice. I had the french toast with raisin bread. Super tasty. Husband got biscuits and gravy with hash browns. The hash brows were cooked perfectly. I love the fact that they still give you the mini muffin and peach before your food comes. Now on to the bakery portion on this trip. They have a large selection of cookies, pastries, breads and doughnuts. It all looked good so we got an assortment to take home. The snicker doodle cookie I got was inedible. It tasted like solid butter and I threw it away after 2 bites. The other stuff that we got was pretty good. You have to eat it within about a day though or it gets stale. I will be back here because it brings back memories and they make a good breakfast.
(4)Paul J.
Good food, nice view. Really annoyed that there are three Wi-Fi signals in this building but no access for customers, especially when I'm waiting 15 minutes for an order to go and there is no cell signal.
(3)Chris S.
We have stopped here often for baked goods and they have always been great! Today we went for breakfast---and the reviews were pretty mixed. First, the signs (like 5) basically saying "control your kids" stressed me out a little. I've never seen anything like it...especially at a touristy FAMILY type place. The food was a little all over. My eggs Benedict were not good (eggs were hard), and my husband and my food were both cold. The people in our group who had the cinnamon rolls and the breakfast burrito all loved it. Our server was good...but the lady who started serving us was super cranky and impatient (especially with our kiddos). We will go back--but probably just for the baked goods and coffee! We will stick to the Kettle in the Claw for breakfast:)
(3)Brooke K.
This restaurant was highly overpriced. Our waitress was very rude. We asked several times for refills on water and it took longer than it should have. Every person at the table had empty glasses. We asked our waitress a question and she looked at us like we were stupid and didn't give us an answer. I bought something at the bakery and the worker packaged my leftovers with someone else's bakery goods. She had to run out and get it from the child who was swinging the bag around. The place gets two stars because they did let us tour their original wood burning stove. The food was huge proportions and wasn't terrible.
(2)Sandy H.
Chicken pot pie needed salt and more chicken. It was more like a veggy pie. Crust was amazing just needs work on the filling. My husband had a burger and loved it. We ordered dessert to go and it was amazing.
(4)Phil M.
Pluses: Country fresh food. Excellent bakery attached to restaurant. Donuts to die for. Large portions for breakfast. Great views and pleasant seating area. Outdoor seating when weather Accommodates. Nice charming town.
(3)Cassie G.
We love this restaurant and the owner is very sweet. We were looking for a wedding cake that was simple, but elegant and she made us the perfect cake and it was so moist and delicious.
(5)Ashley R.
Cute little place! Haven't eaten at the restaurant yet. Just stopped in for pastries. They were ok. I really enjoyed the marionberry turnover! Would love to come back for brunch!
(3)bernie o.
Going to Black Diamond - can't say you've been there if you have never been to the bakery. Good breakfast. Dinners are not that great. Bakery food is good but not cheap.
(3)Kitty F.
I super heart this place. Was in the area between work appointments and stopped here since it was the closest restaurant. So glad I did. Great service and yummy food. The complimentary muffin and half peach was. A charming touch before my meal.
(5)Ashley W.
I've been going here for years and its still delicious. Love the little touches and hospitality... (ie peaches and muffin!) I usually get the yummy french toast but I had the veggie scramble the other day....sooooo good! All their bakery items and smoothies are on point as well!
(5)Shal W.
Just ran in for a fresh apple pie. Was a little disappounted that it was chilled already. Hadn't been here in a number of years and was told that I could order in advance for a warm pie to be set aside. Seeing that half pound cinnamon roll was amazing! Mexican tea cookies baked just right-tender and not at all too dry!
(4)Kate C.
I took my father here when he was visiting during the holidays because apparently he had intended to make a pilgrimage to this bakery back in the...1970s(?) and never quite made it. I can only assume it's gone downhill since then, or our collective standards have gone up. Everything I had here (breakfast, biscuit, doughnut, cookies) was just "OK." Pretty standard "American diner" fare, priced about where you would expect.
(2)Randy S.
Huge portions at a reasonable price and a great view to boot. We shared the Coal Miner with ham plate and added hash Browns and my wife got a cinnamon roll and lemon danish. When both dishes were brought out at separate times we both responded with "holy crap" at the size of the pastries and meal. We absolutely loved the thick sliced ham and scrambled eggs with cheese and my wife thoroughly enjoyed the pastries also. The rest was good also but that was our favorite. Definitely recommend going out of your way to this gem.
(4)Annie M.
Beautiful view and waitress was nice. I got the broccoli nut salad -- so gross. The worst meal I've had in a long time. Doused with mayo. Probably much better as a breakfast place.
(2)Shanon C.
Love the breakfast my kids always ask to go here on Sundays they have the best bacon you can find and also a wonderful pie, donut, and dessert area service is quick and we all love coming here its a bit of a drive but totally worth it
(5)Jose M.
Great breakfast place. The whole family loves it. The service you get here is a roll of the dice. If you get the red headed lady, she is always in that demeanor. All the other ladies are super sweet. Really busy on the weekend so we go early. Their chicken fried steak is great! We've been here for the prime rib dinner once. It was OK.
(4)Jay J.
Great bakery. All of the donuts we tried were fantastic. Great assortment of cookies and other treats as well. They are well known for their breads and what we tried was very good.
(4)Angela L.
We made reservations for Mothers Day and waited over an hour, then had to leave and was unable to have a family breakfast with my Mother in Law because we had to get on the road to visit my Mother. It was really too bad. If they couldn't fit us, why did they still take our reservation down? Won't be going back there. Don't recommend it.
(2)Kassi S.
My family and I stopped by Black Diamond Bakery & Restaurant for dinner. SERVICE: The service was a bit odd. The woman who was waiting on us was hard to read and kind of seemed as though she was annoyed that we walked in with a group of six people. FOOD: Every Friday and Saturday, they have prime rib as a special! Cooked as ordered and plentiful helpings of your sides (salad, rice, steamed vegetables, etc.). I ordered the Citrus topped salmon dinner. The fish was a bit dry and I did find a small hair in my rice... Hence the four stars. BAKERY: As for the bakery portion... FIVE STARS. We ordered marionberry pie, chocolate creme and apple pie. All three were great! We ended up buying an apple danish as well as a raspberry danish and let me tell you, I could have eaten those danishes for a week straight. RESTROOMS: The ladies room was clean and was kept up. It was nice to walk into a well kept bathroom.
(4)Rachel P.
I could have sworn I already wrote a review for this place. Overall customer service is okay, really everything is OKAY- not really spectacular but at least I feel like we're supporting a local business. A few of the bakery items are "special" but mostly mediocre. We'll be back, it's slightly better then safeway.
(3)Holly F.
We had no service acknowledgment nothing for 15 mins after being seated on 7-25-14. Over heard someone telling our waitress someone was in her section. I got the veggie sandwich on sourdough. It was good. My boyfriend got the meatloaf sandwich and said never again. Bakery was great. We each got a cookie for the road. There is a craft shop located inside as well. That gal was very nice and gave me a quick history lesson on the bakery!
(3)Deanna L.
Now getting threats of having the police called on me or being taken to court for threatening employees have no what you are talking about? please leave me alone I have already filed a complaint with owner do not contact me AGAIN or I will press charges for harassment. I will also contact the owner of black Diamond bakery again if you continue with your shenanigans.
(1)Tonia M.
This used to be my family's favorite place to eat breakfast. We have been going for over 10 years. The last few years the quality of food has gone down hill. Most the employees are very nice all except a older short lady with black curly hair. She basically HATES children and she doesn't try to hide it! Speaking of hating children I find it very rude and over kill that they have big signs posted throughout the restaurant asking that people "control" their kids. Not just one sign, at least 5!! After one more run in with the child Hating server this morning we are not going back.
(1)Kayla H.
Love the food and the atmospher here. Deducting one star simply because the servers take a while to come back around and check on you or ring your check. They are very very friendly though.
(4)Jesse C.
Place was packed with Father's Day diners when I pulled up on my bike soaking wet and 40 miles in to my ride. Even though there was a 40 minute wait for a table they let me order a sandwich to-go and brought it to me in the cafe section. I got an espresso drink to warm my bones while I waited and considering how busy they were my sandwich came out relatively fast and was perfectly tasty. When my travels bring me near I will be stopping here again.
(4)Larry W.
We went here for breakfast on a Friday and it was a pleasant experience. Everything was cooked just right and we had a friendly and efficient waitress. This is not a "swanky" place, but no matter...good food with great menu selections. The plus is that the room is very light and airy and the whole east wall is glass and faces a pretty outdoor garden with Mt. Rainier behind. We even took friends out the next night for dinner and had a great experience. Portions are large including the pies which are baked in the bakery on-site!
(5)Emily L.
For casual place, food was great! Service is as spotty as everyone has indicated. And does seem to be driven by the owner. We walked in and the owner (we assume) was chewing out a server, who gave it right back to her. I am a first generation East Asian and all kinds of cultural stereotype rational / justifications are running through my head... Not that it is a good excuse for it. Server for our table was great. And fresh baked items were delicious! We stopped at the bakery to bring stuff home. We will be back!
(5)Lynn M.
Quaint place with awesome baked goods - especially the lemon marange (sp?) pie. Quiet at dinner time - but good food. I deducted a star because the seats were extremely uncomfortable. Hard wood seats - I folded my coat to sit on.
(4)Frank M.
Ok, I'm super picky when it comes to bakery's, when I order fresh baked goods, I expect freshly made that day, NOT FROZEN! Sure they save tons of money by freezing their items, that would be OK for Safeway, but a sin for a fresh bakery. Black diamond bakes big batches each day of different types, then freezes the bunch and takes out from the freezer for what they need that day. My suggestion when ordering your favorite bread, ask if it was baked today and not from frozen. You might get lucky and they made your favorite that day. Or ask them which day they bake your favorite and go back then. Cafe is OK, but people need to know about the bake and freeze policy. There should be a law where they need to put a sign, "Previously frozen"
(2)Brenda E.
Great breakfast....so much food!!! LOVE the blueberry cake donuts!

It was decent enough food, average diner fare. The server appeared crabby. When my mom asked if she could have cole slaw instead of fries, the server appeared irritated. She brought out one meal about 8 minutes before the other two meals. Then brought out toast about five minutes after the breakfast plate was presented. Mediocre.

I an saddened to post this, but it must be said. I grew up coming to this place, always looking forward to the Eggs Benedict and a cinnamon roll from the bakery. The roll is the only reason I gave a 2 star. The restaurant side was a major letdown. The staff was rude and not helpful. We waited FOREVER for our food and it wasn't even that busy. The hollandaise sauce on my Eggs Benedict was awful. The only thing that was good was my sons pan cakes, but how can you mess up pan cakes. The new owner has ruined one of the best breakfast spots in the area.

Awesome pizza!!! Best crust and fun atmosphere! Toys are fun for kids to play with!!! Love this place!
(5)Bridget S.
It used to be terrific. We used to head over for baked goods and everything was tasty. I think they've changed ownership, because the baked goods now taste like they've really cheaped out on the ingredients. You can't get chintzy on the quality of ingredients when you do baked goods. Every wonder why items from the Walmart bakery taste greasy and unpleasant? I'm not really sure WHAT they use in it, but it ain't butter. I'm pretty sure it ain't butter anymore here, either. If you take a bite, you can definitely believe it's not butter.

One of our family's favorite breakfast spots! Great food and great service!
(4)Aaron B.
First visit here and we will be back. Had the split pea soup while the kids had the PB and J. Service was superb! The hot cocoas were spectacular -- for the kids. The donuts to go were like no other. Definitely worth a visit -- and make it an afternoon trip if you are coming out from Seattle!!

We went back to Black Diamond Bakery on Sunday 6-29-14 and it wasn't as crowded and we had great service.....like usual. I do highly recommend Black Diamond Bakery. If you're going to go on Sunday morning, try to get there before 9am to be easily seated and to get better service.

Everyone in my party loves breakfast - this is the place to go! Great gravy, thick sliced breakfast meats and yummy choices!
(5)Hazel M.
If I could give this place a zero I would. The Black Diamond Bakery used to be a scrumptious hidden gem in the NW for many years. The yummy peach served with cottage cheese or the complementary blueberry muffin with each meal was great. Times have changed. There must be a new owner... The food is not the same, the service is not the same, the people who work there don't seem happy at all, you can see it in their faces. The breakfast we had was marginal at the most. When you visit this place you can't help but stop off in the bakery and buy a few good items. I saw an asian woman (I assume who was the owner?) berating and talking to an employee like she was a dog. I did buy a couple of items from the bakery and they were decent but not worth the drive. Well looks like I'm not returning, sad but true because I grew up going to this place.
(1)Kristen C.
Had lunch here and was pleasently suprised with the portions and quality of food after reading some bad reviews. Large portions, thick cuts of bacon and good flavors. Picked up a pie and some bakery treats for later.
(5)Marty S.
They did have dinner there about a year ago....they eliminated dinner? Just like they eliminated restaurant.com gift certificates about a year ago too. That drives their 4 star rating down to a 2 star. Too many restaurants have bogos and such to avoid paying full price. The brunch is tasty, but let's face it, breakfast food is cheap compared to dinner. Their prime rib dinner was very good....if they still offer it....but full price at a "Denny's Quality Cuisine" is too much money.

The waitress we had started off in a really bad mood, but we were trying to make her feel better because it was so early in the morning and she was already in a bad mood. We were able to cheer her up and she proceeded to get much nicer throughout our meal. The food was tasteless and not good at all. This place has really gone down hill. :( won't be coming back.
(2)Danna P.
I love the food here! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the service. It is apparent that the wait staff are super unhappy working here. Every time we come we get staff that look dead inside, like someone is stealing all their joy. Most of the servers can't even crack a smile. I don't know what is going on, but it didn't used to be this way. Happy employee's make happy customers.

This place used to be my favorite place to eat. Beautiful view of Mount Rainier and green garden all year round. The last several visits have been very disappointing. Our order came out wrong twice, toast was burnt, omelet bland and globs of cheese piled on top. The waitress seemed overwhelmed in a half full dining room. She was not thrilled to help us at all and never thanked us once. I ordered a side of bacon with my omelet, the waitress forgot. My bacon came to the table when I was finished eating and I was still charged for it. The waitress was quick to take my payment but we waited over 25 minutes to get my card back and a receipt to sign. Needless to say I will not be back to eat, I can still enjoy the view without having to pay for horrible service and bland food. So disappointing. :(

As you fly through 169, a meal pit stop is probably not what you're thinking. You're thinking "I'm not so sure they have great food out here..." But lo! And behold! Stop at the Black Diamond Bakery and they'll make you eat your words. Friendly service, delicious baked goodies and a wonderful meal later, I'm a fan! And the view from he restaurant area is simply gorgeous. So didn't miss out on this hidden gem... I'm packing a cookie and a donut to-go now!

A word to the wise: PROTECT YOUR BUTTER! I wanted to come here for brunch because... well... that is what I love to do on Sundays. I had come here about 3 years ago with my family and remember it being great, so I decided this would be a great spot. After the trek, (it's OUT there!) I was relieved that there wasn't a wait. We were seated immediately and asked what we'd like to drink while we perused our menus. I asked our server what was offered, and after she listed almost everything but the kitchen sink, I ordered a mimosa. My boyfriend had the same. Our server asked for our IDs, then admitted that she didn't know how old you had to be for a mimosa, and couldn't find the birthdate on one of the IDs. What?? There are only two dates on the card! When another server came over, we realized that Can't-find-date was not actually our server. (We actually spent the rest of our time there trying to figure out what her role was there...) I ordered the chicken fried steak with eggs over-medium and wheat toast. My boyfriend got the Italian Scramble with wheat toast. Both dishes were... underwhelming. I loved how comforting and filling the chicken fried steak was without being greasy and heavy. However, the taste was a little plain. The toast, though? INCREDIBLE. I guess it should be, especially if your restaurant name includes "Bakery." I was strongly considering ordering a side of toast because it was THAT amazing. The servers were incredibly... available. I hesitate saying "attentive" because if they were more attentive, they wouldn't have had to come by as much as they did... but I guess that's much better than being ignored. The view (on a clear day... thanks a lot, Washington...) is picturesque, the atmosphere is very grandma's-house-ish, and they give you a peach half and mini muffin as appetizers. (Cute!) Anyway... as we were halfway through our meal, Can't-find-date creeped up to the table, and just took. a. butter. And then left. I thought she was coming to ask how things were or if we needed anything else... Nope. She took a butter. From a table with patrons at it. In the middle of their food. SHE WORKS THERE!! Why wasn't there any butter in the kitchen?? Seriously? You could have also asked! It was so disrespectful but we couldn't help from busting out in laughter. Protect your butter.

This place had a lot of wonderful qualities: a great view, pretty good basic food, and great items from the bakery case. The young lady that assisted us with our 'to-go' bakery items was cheerful and very helpful. However, our waitress in the restaurant must have been having a bad day, or something. She wasn't friendly in the least, very curt, and when they were out of the specific bread for my sandwich she wasn't apologetic and seemed barely civil, like it was my fault. We were extra nice and used extra 'please's and 'thank you's to no avail. I will say that her attitude soured our experience a bit. But, it was a good 'down home' place that was perfect on our way home from a hike. Nothing spectacular, no extra frills, but good basic food. I'm sure we'll go there again... especially for the baked goods!

Great place to eat, the food is always good both times I was there, my wife and I ate Breakfast. The Eggs Benny is probably the best Eggs Benedict I have gotten in a while. The sauce is really great and you can order it as a side to put on hashbrowns, which makes them so much better. I think they should add Grits (I am from the South) and it would be perfect. Everything was well made and cooked as I ordered it. I like my fried eggs to be medium hard, not so runny, and this is the first place where I have ordered my eggs "Over medium well" and they came that way. Their tradition of putting a half peach and a small blueberry muffin (which was excellent, their bakery is really good), before every meal we had was a good choice. The wait staff is really good, and very attentive. When they are busy, things can get mixed up, but for the most part, it all went well (For example, the 2nd time we went, it was Sunday Lunch time and they were swamped. I ordered a large milk with my breakfast, but they forgot to bring it to me at all, so I had them leave it off, but other than that, the rest was great. 4 stars is as high as I go for places like this. I reserve 5 stars for fine dining places, so they got my highest rating for a regular restaurant.
(4)Freddy R.
Our server took our drink and food order, brought our food, never brought our drinks, never returned. We finished our food and finally went to the register where she was standing to get our bill and she said she forgot she was serving us. Still charged us for our drinks though... (We had them removed from the bill). The food was great but must be difficult hiring good servers.

This is just for the bakery. I'm really torn because they have one of the best coconut cake donuts that I have ever tasted, but the girls that work there are major deal breakers. They always act like you're an inconvenience for being an actual customer and BUYING something from them, and they NEVER smile or seem the least bit happy to work there. I kept going back for the coconut donuts, but the customer service alone killed my joy. What a shame, right? I would've been a loyal customer, but it doesn't seem like they want that.
(2)Mike W.
I've been coming here since I was just a child. I always order the grilled cheese sandwich. Comes with chips. I ask for a side of chowder too when it's clam chowder day. The grilled cheese here is probably the best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had in my life... Seriously amazing.
(5)Jake W.
Their service is impeccable. Even if they make a mistake, they make it right. They're always quick to tend to whatever you need, and that's all before you even taste the food. Their breakfasts, on a sunny day, are impossible to beat. They have a giant bay window where you can view mount rainier, and almost reach out and touch it. I was shown this place by my girlfriend, and I'll never stop recommending it. 5 stars all day long.
(5)j c.
We try to give local business our business. We've been here 4 times and service has been questionable. Today, that's it. Waited over 15 minutes to get a waitress and it went downhill from there. Won't return to the restaurant side.
(2)Vanessa H.
I had heard great things about this bakery but was disappointed in the food and the wait time. We were seated right away, but it took about 5 minutes for us to order due to it being understaffed that day. When we did get our food, about 20-25 minutes later, my croissant turkey sandwich was soggy! The croissant was also on the small side, but I do realize this is not Costco. My husband also noticed there was a lot of food just sitting on the counter waiting to be served for extended periods of time. My husband's sandwich, a rueben, was toasted instead of grilled, and was charred past the point of being ok to be served. However, the bakery section was much less disappointing and that is why I am giving it 3 stars instead of 2. I really prefer CJ's Bakery in general and will be going there from now on.
(3)Krissy -.
I love this place! It feels cozy and warm. We arrived before the busy Sunday brunch crowd. The sun was out and there is an amazing view of Mt. Rainier when you walk into the restaurant. We had the best seat in the house. We ordered their breakfast for the first time. Before your meal arrived, you get half a peach with a mini muffin. I thought that was odd, but it's different and it was good! I ordered the veggie omelette. This was good to feed two people! Huge portions! The bacon was thick and delicious! Made just right. Afterwards we went to check out the bakery. So many yummy items there, but I was so full from breakfast that I had to pass. But we did order some bread, the sasquatch bread, since the cashier recommended we try this. She was right. It was really good. Filled with wheat and oats. Their service is very friendly with a smile. Hope to be back soon.

I'm only reviewing the marionberry pie!! Delicious!
(4)Lou M.
Cake is not very good, and the cupcakes are grocery store quality. This place is legendary and is supposed to be really good, so I thought about having them do my wedding cake (they are the only place nearby that does fondant FYI). CJ's bakery just down the road has MUCH MUCH better cake and pastries. Plus the people here are always super rude. We also ate at the cafe when we were here and it was terrible, AND our waitress was really bitchy.
(2)Lauren G.
I wanted this place to be better than it was. So badly. Everyone was super friendly, but given the lack of breakfast options in the area, I expected thicker bacon, fresher vegetables, nicer cheeses.
(3)Susan W.
Rounding up to 3 stars for the friendly service, view of Mt.Rainier & coconut cream pie. Was tempted to mark it 2 stars because $10 for a turkey sandwich with such a small amount of turkey & a handful of potato chips is crazy! Came here for lunch today with my Aunt who lives in the area. She had been before & recommended it. She had a pretty good looking Denver Omelet that was served with a nice looking biscuit and a pile of hashbrowns. My turkey club was just okay. The menu lists it as coming with swiss, cheddar, cream cheese, mayo & the turkey, bacon, lettuce & tomato and guacamole. I ordered it with none of the "goo", swiss, cheddar, cream cheese & mayo. Asked for extra guac & if that was extra I'd hate to see the regular amount. Wish they offered french fries or potato salad instead of chips. If I went back I'd order a breakfast that is served til 2pm.
(3)Melissa S.
I used to go to this restaurant for breakfast with my boyfriend (now husband) many years ago. Just went for dinner there and the food was awful. I've heard that breakfast is still good, but the dinner cuisine was terrible. Nobody at the table liked their meal, except for my 5 year old who got Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Can't screw that up! I got the halibut which was had a thick glob of cream sauce on top. My dad got chicken parm which was overcooked and greasy. Just gross and for $18+ a plate? So overpriced for both the food and the atmosphere. Worse than Denny's!
(2)Barbara O.
Had a most horrid veggie omelette with lumps of cheese that never melted and veggies that were probably cooked last night, limp & unappetizing. I would have sent it back but the poor waitress was being harassed by the owner who seems to terrify all of the staff. Really didn't want the peaches & muffin but the owner made the waitress bring them even though we said no thank you. We were here a few years ago and there was a long line out the door on a Saturday morning. This time reservations were unnecessary! To bad the kitchen has gone down hill. View of Mt. Rainier was pretty.
(2)Judy O.
I went there several years ago and it was wonderful, now, just so so. I ordered a turkey and cheese sandwich. I was expecting real turkey but the turkey was pressed turkey or deli style........so not good. I also ordered chips instead of fries and the chips looked more like crumbs from the bottom of the bag........i mean come on can you open another bag!?? The one great thing was the bread. It was wonderful. Waitress was pretty nice but made me feel rushed The bakery had wonderful items and i bought a loaf of sourdough bread and asked if they could slice it. The counterperson said she would try......i am like huh, is it that hard? You do have a bread slicing machine, right? Beautiful little town, Black Diamond but would not make the drive from Seattle again.........believe this restaurant is over rated.......

Wow, I don't even know where to start. I went here with my family since they were meeting a large group of friends here (maybe 50-60 people). Yet, despite the number of people there was only 1 waitress working. Umm what? How on earth can 1 waitress handle that many people by herself and still give good service? I ordered the French Dip since it was recommended by the waitress. The first thing that turned me off by this place is that when I asked if I could get a salad instead of the fries I was told, "No, the fries are just a garnish so they can't be substituted. You can only choose between regular fries and sweet potato fries." Well that was definitely strange, I don't think I've ever been told I couldn't substitute something for fries. The next problem with this place is how long it took to get our food, it took over 45 minutes for it to come out. Then when I finally got my food it was certainly not worth the wait. The meat was completely unseasoned on bland bread with an almost flavorless au jus. Has nobody here heard of salt and pepper? Even some grilled onions would have added at least a LITTLE flavor. I had to put salt and pepper on my sandwich and in my au jus just to be able to eat it. I tried to send it back, but couldn't get the super busy waitress to stop no matter how many times I tried. I was starving, so after waiting awhile I ended up just eating the dreadful thing. Also, the fries were definitely NOT just a garnish as I had been told. More than half the plate was taken up by my sometimes crunchy and sometimes mushy sweet fries. Furthermore, my sandwich was overly priced, especially considering the shitty quality I got. I didn't even get anything to dip my fries in, and the waitress was so completely busy it's not like I could catch her to get even ketchup. I was almost waiting for Gordan Ramsay to pop out yelling at the owners and find out that we were on Kitchen Nightmares, cause this place is definitely a kitchen nightmare. To make matters worse than they already were, while I was waiting for my food I decided to look to see what bread and desserts they had, since it is supposedly a bakery. Though, if you want to buy anything at the bakery part you apparently have to walk around the restaurant, find the owner, and tell them you want to buy something. However, I did not know this and waited a good half an hour for someone to come assist me. They really should put a bell or a sign or something since most people would just walk out after waiting awhile. For a place that calls itself a bakery their desserts did not look very appetizing, even I could make something way better looking, so I ended up getting some bread. I got the cinnamon loaf, pumpkin bread, and garlic french bread. So far I've tried the cinnamon loaf and pumpkin bread, and neither were any good. The cinnamon bread had barely any cinnamon in it and mostly just tasted like really dry and bland potato bread. The pumpkin bread also tasted nothing like its name, as I could not taste any pumpkin at all- it tasted a lot more like coffee cake. I haven't tried the garlic french bread, but from my experiences with everything else from this restaurant I don't have high hopes for it. I'm really not sure how you can screw up bread so badly, especially pumpkin bread. However, this place is so skilled that they were able to do just that. I heard that this place used to be awesome, but holy hell these new owners certainly don't know what they're doing. They need to hire more waiters/waitresses and an entire new kitchen team, and buy a freaking bell to put in the front. This place just has so many problems I can't see it staying open for very long. I definitely recommend avoiding this place and going somewhere else.

The staff was AMAZING while we were there! I can't not express that enough! Food was good too!
(4)Jeff S.
Spent the weekend in Black Diamond and heard the buzz about this great place from many locals and visitors. We were not disappointed for our breakfast visit. Portions were large, and we all left full and happy. Waffles, Pancakes, omlettes were all delicious.
(4)David B.
Bakery? I'm not impressed. The quality is just so-so. The prices are too high for just so-so. An ounce of pretension...
(2)Tracy M.
Stopped into the bakery portion to grab some pastries and sourdough bread. Don't often get out here, but fond memories of this place, and I was early for my friend's party. The selection of pastries in the case looked very nice. Although each pastry tray is wrapped in clingfilm/saranwrap. While this probably is a good thing for hygiene, it wasn't so visually appealing. Just because I never see this at any other bakery, and so it instantly made me think the pastries were old, somehow. I don't think that's the case, but it was odd seeing them all wrapped up. The cheese danishes were delicious and didn't taste old. The sourdough bread was lovely...a bit lighter/crumblier than anticipated and slicing it at home was kind of a mess (it's a very large round non-traditional size) but tasty. I didn't think to ask them to slice it for me. Wish she'd offered. Service was a little strange, though. It was a weekday afternoon and not very busy. No one behind the bakery counter, but I made eye contact and waved to a waiter standing in the restaurant. She nodded in my direction. But she didn't come over and neither did anyone else. After standing there for almost a full five minutes (which isn't a long time in the grand scheme of things, but definitely left me feeling ignored, as employees wandered around on both sides in the restaurant parts). A man entered with a delivery of many boxes on a handtruck. He saw me standing/waiting at the bakery counter and he called over to the waitress who had nodded at me initially. She finally came over to ring up my loaf of bread and pastries. While my order was over $5, they definitely don't like to take credit cards here (and I get that. Working for a small business myself, I know that the transaction fees charged to businesses who accept cards...they add up). Luckily I had $10 cash on me, so was able to pay her that. (Had I not had cash, I think she would have grudgingly accepted the credit card, but it was made clear it was not a preferred method). Bakery goods are tasty. But it might take some time to get service. Also, the bakery section feels dimly lit, and the saranwrap over all the pastries gives the wrong impression that they're older or shipped from elsewhere.
(4)Kris N.
Beautiful surrounding, delicious food, great for family get togethers. The waitresses could be friendlier, they seem so rushed and short. But all in all, enjoy the time spent at Black Diamond Bakery!
(4)Nerick M.
I think the best part of the Black Diamond Bakery and Restaurant is the small town feeling. It was a nice change of pace from the city life. In a nutshell: the service was exceptionally friendly and attentive, the delicious food came with generous portions, and the bakery was just the "icing on the cake". I don't know if they specialize in breakfast, but mine was excellent. I'll be back to try out their lunch. Black Diamond Bakery and Restaurant has the "NMOS stamp of approval"!
(4)Mary L.
We've been to the restaurant several times for breakfast, which was ok. We then went there for Mother's Day dinner. We had the worst food we have ever eaten. Boxed Kraft Mac and cheese which was very dry and cold. Must have made it the day before. Ordered their Hamburger another mistake, hard on the outside, raw in the middle. I ordered sirloin steak med-well with garlic potatoes(no garlic in them) and veggies. All the food was cold, steak was well, well done. Complained but did no good. We left and left all the rotten food on the table
(1)Tim D.
Decent breakfast spot. The food is pretty good, the portions are generous, and the staff are very nice. If you happen to be in the area, it's a good place to get breakfast, but I wouldn't go too far out of my way for it.
(3)Barbara H.
We've been a Black Diamond Bakery customer for many years, but have not tried the restaurant until this month. We've gone to breakfast twice on a weekend now. Cloudy days are definitely a better experience for locals than sunny days, due to the amazing view of Mt. Rainier from their dining area. On weekends, they are a "short-order" joint that's long on the food and not so hot on the quality. My scrambled eggs were tossed on a blazing hot grill, left to crisp and then chopped, resulting in a chewy product. My hash browns were crispy on the outside and frozen cold on the inside. The first time we went, the breakfast meat was gooey greasy (both bacon/sausage patties). Like the typical Seattleite, I grinned and dealt with it and tried one more time. Yelp is a great place to share the truth, so hoping they are watching. NO ONE wants to make a fuss in the middle of a dining room about their food, due to collateral embarrassment. I guess that's what you get by going on the weekend, when it's a factory. It's a cute place, but I think we're done with the restaurant. I will still go to BDB for bread...This work is done by a different crew than the short-order cooks, it's worth a stop there to buy real bread and bakery items. The bakery is excellent. The restaurant needs help. From my knothole, it's two strikes for the BDB breakfast restaurant...so they're out for our family. Our recommendation is to go to Cedar River Grill for similar small town feel and much better attention to food quality and then take a walk where you can enjoy the view of the mountain.
(1)Bridgette F.
I went here yesterday for lunch and got a mini coconut cream pie for dessert as well as a cheese danish for this morning's breakfast. The veggie sandwich was delicious and had the perfect ratio of dressing to veggies. The sourdough bread was soft and fresh and the fries were perfect. The coconut cream pie was very delicious, but the danish seemed kind of dry and mediocre.
(4)Forrest F.
Amazing food with generous portions. Breakfast comes with complimentary fruit cup and the dining room has a great view of raineiar....provided its a clear day. Well worth traveling to.
(4)Nancy C.
Took my Mom to lunch here. My meatloaf sandwich and potatoe soup were just ok (guess I just like my Mom's meatloaft) her Turkey/Provolone Croissant was excellent! Our waitress was super attentive and friendly. Kids menu not to creative - little one just got a grilled cheese. 3 Stars for lunch. Now the Bakery - it is 5+ stars! My favorite bread in the whole wide world is Crystal Mountain bread (add roast beef and havarti and you have the world's best sandwich). It still tastes the same as it did 20 years ago - even the picky husband agreed that it was excellent. We also got some cookies which were really yummy (especially the Russain Tea Cake). Will defifnitely stop by next time I drive thru Black Diamond and hit the bakery!
(4)Joshua S.
Wicked Awesome Donuts! Simply amazing bakery. Great food. Off the beaten path, but it helps make the place great.
(5)J G.
Pies, huge portions, and a killer meatloaf sandwich, need I say more?
(4)Seattle J.
Super friendly service and hearty filling food. We went for lunch and tried the club sandwich, tomato soup and cheese burger. The bread, rolls and hamburger buns were all made on the premises and very good. The desserts looked really good but we didn't get a chance to try them.
(4)Maria K.
This place has the most amazing, affordable pastries. Their breads are so delicious and very reasonably priced in my opinion. The cinammon raisin is excellent for breakfast and their Sasquatch bread was perfect for making grilled cheese and dipping in soup. Excellent flavor! The garlic croutons are also a true treat as they are perfectly seasoned and baked. The napoleon bar I got was so delicious and the portion was large for the price (only $2!). If you have time, I would recommend stopping in for a meal in addition to just picking up some bread or pasteries. I came here for breakfast and had some french toast with their cinammon bread and it was so amazing. I wish I lived closer because I would be a regular. This place is well worth the fairly short drive from Seattle or the neighboring suburbs!
(5)Matthew R.
Wow, this place was great! My wife and I had never heard of this restaurant; we only went here on a friend's recommendation. When we arrived here for breakfast, a waitress promptly seated us and took our orders. While we were waiting, they brought out a slice of peach and a blueberry muffin. The omelet, french toast, scrambled eggs, and hash browns we ordered tasted good, and was a large portion size. It is a clean restaurant with good service and decent prices. We will definitely go here again!
(5)Tarek G.
First time coming out here as we had heard about it a lot. We finally made it out there and had a great time. Very down to earth kind of vibe and it wasn't crazy busy like some breakfast joints. The biscuits and gravy are fantastic an the eggs beny with a side of French toast was apparently really good as my wife had them down before I could even try them! Great restaurant and I imagine on a sunny day you could get some killer views.
(4)deborah d.
The brekkie offering were broad and a blend of traditional and creative. I had had a yen for French toast for *months* and was able to balance it with a couple of over-medium eggs, which were done to perfection. I chose the cinnamon nut bread for the FT, and did not regret it one bit!!! I also had a taste of my friend's skillet breakfast - and I know what I am going to have for my next visit! Thanks goodness for my friend (she is a regular!) and her recommendation. The location was good and if it had not been for the overcast day Mt Ranier & company would have been visible.
(4)Susan B.
Would have loved to see that view of the mtn, but it was cloudy the day we were there. We had yummy croissant sandwiches, buttery and flaky (can't remember if it was turkey something but it had bacon!). And then...the pie...(see photo). Oh wow. Cherry pie. Flaky crust, sweet cherry filling and lattice top. I wish I had room to eat the whole piece. If I had known about the pie I would have had a smaller sandwich, or maybe just salad, or maybe just the PIE! I wish I had a slice of that pie right now! Will have to make the trek back to Black Diamond just for pie one of these days.
(4)John M.
Good food and generous portions. I had a tuna sandwich which was really pretty good as tuna sandwiches go. I also took a coconut cream pie to go. It was awesome and without doubt the best coconut creme pie I have had. Pretty darn good experience.
(4)Alan D.
Great place for breakfast and the pastries are to die for. We have been there many times and will continue to go back. Love this place!
(5)Diana F.
We like this place. It's a great location close to where my folks live. The service is phenomenal, but the place is starting to feel run down a bit. Maybe the quality of food has gone down over the years too. Not bad, mind you, just not as great as is used to be. You get your moneys worth, the portions are huge. Visit the bakery for some killer pastries and bread to take home with you. Super bonus points on the location. There is a real live old-timey steam engine train and car that kids can climb all over, about 1/2 a city block away. Visible from the restaurant. Great for families. If you're in the neck of the woods, don't pass it up.

Something evil has happened to this place ... and I would know! I used to love going here. It's what an old girlfriend would have called 'quaint'. Restaurant, bakery, gift shop, in a small town atmosphere with old world touches. But something's wrong - and I think I know what it is. The group I went to lunch with immediately picked up on the fact that the staff was unhappy. Not unhappy with us, but unhappy. You could see it in their faces - there was that 'cry of help' look to them, and it wasn't just one person either. The 'happiness' was gone, replaced by something else, tension, unease, a look of anxiety. We ordered our food, and it came pretty promptly. Unfortunately a good portion of it was overcooked - bacon dark and crunchy, scrambled eggs brown on the bottom, that kind of overcooked. We would have sent it back but the place was crowded, so we elected to be grateful for what we had. So what's the problem? I suspect that there is a new owner or a new manager, and that the staff is none too happy with the change. Probably some cheapskate who thinks cooking bacon for orders is too time consuming and who makes the cooks pre-mix and pre-cook everything the day before. Probably someone who is more concerned with 'turning the tables' than 'the dining experience'. If I'm right, and I often am, then I will look back on this as the death knell of Black Diamond's keystone tourist attraction. From reading other reviews, it does look like this place changed hands recently. If you're the new owner, consider yourself on notice. We customers can see the effect that your cost cutting changes and management style are having, and we are none too pleased with your current food output or your efforts running the restaurant. Don't blame your staff either, it's your restaurant and you're trying to save money. Bad idea! Best listen to your customers and staff and reverse course, else you may soon find your investment wasted. Surprisingly the unhappy mood did not seem to extend into the bakery. I guess it's pretty easy to maintain your level of satisfaction when you are standing behind a counter of hundreds of freshly baked breads, cookies, brownies, and chocolate treats. But I'm not going to give this place high marks just for the bakery, not when the food is the draw that brings in the crowds. =;^)

5 stars for the bakery, hand dem da budda baby, they are ona roll!! WOW!! Spent many a special side trip to this place back in the day, we'd show up early, on the way to mushroom picking, non-illegal types, with a sticka budda and wait for them to let us in. Gotta get it fresh and warm right out of the oven. Boy, oh boy do they serve it up here with the finest. Buy a loaf or two and rip it apart on way to the car, apply liberal amount of real butter, let it melt and enjoy. Take the time to stop here on your way to Mt. Rainier! PURE SATISFACTION!!!

Go for the hash-browns, but be prepared to take home lots of tasty bread. Weekend breakfasts are crazy busy, but there is a late lunch sweet spot where parking is easy and the place is fully staffed that we like to exploit. If you opt for the $25 certificate on Restaurant.com bring a huge appetite and some patience... the process is new to them. With a bookstore and smoked meat shop just next door this makes a great place to pick up picnic goodies and head south to grassy patches and mountain passes. Don't expect to pay for your bakery goodies with your meal... they may be the same building,,, but no cross charging is allowed.

This is my favorite breakfast restaurant. The scenery is awesome. The mountain is right outside the dining room window. There is a cool little used book store down the street too. The bakery is top notch too. I love the whole thing. You need to go!! For breakfast, they serve you a little blueberry muffin and a half a peach while you wait and their toast is from the bakery so it's fresh and home made. Yummo.

Took my son to breakfast. Good quantity of food, and the servers were very conscientious, but the servers kept tripping over each other. Multiple people coming by to ask about drinks, etc. I had the eggs "beney", sort of a riff on eggs benedict, but served on a biscuit. the biscuit under the egg was terrible (almost powerdery), and the dish wasn't served very hot. Having bad biscuits at a bakery is kind of surprising... The pancakes my son has was OK. The bacon they game him was burnt, we had to ask for another order. They happily swapped it out for him.

If you are in the mood for a hearty home cooked breakfast in a quaint homey environment, check this place out. If you go on the weekend, be prepared to wait in their overflow room. You can get a coffee, play board games, check out the shops (complete with pets that work the door). Breakfast...we all love breakfast. Once you actually get seated, then you have to decide. Eggs Benedict....wow. I am not a fan of ham (usually), but the succulent ham steak on this dish is fantastic. Sometimes I substitute sausage patties for ham.....and their patties are HUGE. So good. But definitely not guilt free. I always ask for the hollandaise on the side, otherwise my food is drowning in it. Coming from a eggs benny snob, this place rocks. They also give you a peach and a muffin with your meal. Cute touch. Nice drive through the country if you have some time on a saturday/sunday morning. Don't tell too many people, thought....it's quite busy as is :)

They are a bakery and a great one to boot. Thus things like sandwiches are wonderful due to the great bread. But on the downside I just had a bowl of chili there and it was just awful. I swear it had a burnt taste to it. Stick with the baked items gang and you won't be disappointed.
